Expository Writing

Each Merganser has been assigned a research report to write. Some are waiting to complete this for their second assignment, as they work first on a narrative. However many have begun this already. Many of the learners wanted to jump ahead to creating their slideshow, however that is the second to last step, and even unnecessary for this assignment. The Mergansers are learning the steps to follow for a successful research project and written report. They are also learning what a multiple paragraph essay is and how to properly construct paragraphs. (Some had been under the misconception that paragraphs of a story could be called chapters... I assured the kids they would not yet be writing novels of over 100 pages.)     1- Choose topic (more advanced... choose Thesis).    2- Plan and organize - create an Outline   3- Conduct research according to the outline and take organized notes.   4- Write first draft of text.  5- Edit and Revise text.  6- "Publish" final draft (Learners will finish with a final draft of an essay... which will prepare them for the transition to Raven).  6 - Present Report (this is optional for this assignment)
